At the August 15 Citywide Tenant Assembly, we spent the afternoon gathered by neighborhood to discuss the specific threats facing different parts of the city and how we can join with those we live closest to to take them on and protect one another from displacement. Today, in the neighborhood at the epicenter of this AI-driven eviction wave and spiking rents, tenants are fighting back. Here is their statement from their launch yesterday:
In the face of a wave of eviction and buy out threats in the neighborhood, over 50 people met on September 8th to form a new volunteer-based organization, the North Beach Tenant Support Network. The network will provide know-your-rights information to tenants threatened with evictions and stop landlord efforts to eliminate rent controlled housing through unit mergers, conversions, and demolitions. Participants heard from tenants who are presently fighting their own evictions and those who successfully beat back previous evictions. The coalition’s members include the San Francisco Tenants Union, North Beach Now, Community Tenants Association, North Beach Tenants Committee, 1120 Jackson Tenants Association, and the 2055 Powell Tenants Association. While centered in North Beach the network plans to provide support to tenants in adjoining neighborhoods including Chinatown, East Nob Hill, and East Russian Hill.
